System 6 will also run. But most new software requires at least 7.6.1
I have one running 7.6.1 and another running 8.0.1

According to http://www.apple-history.com/gallery.html

Minimum System: 7.1.1
Maximum System: 8.1

I run my 20mb 280c with 7.5.5, and it runs great!

I wouldn't go higher... besides anything higher than 7.5.5 requires buying
it. hehe
