If one has the bucks to buy the newest software like Appleworks 6, etc,
one probably also has the bucks to buy a PowerPC powerbook.

For more modest budgets,
a 040 Mac like my 280c with 7.1.1 can still do Netscape 4.08, Word 5 & 6,
 Excel 4, Powerpoint 3, ClarisWorks 4, MYOB Accounting 7, Now Contact &
Up-to-Date 3.6.5, FedEx Ship, Quicktake 150 Camera software, Quicktime 3.0
Photoshop 3.0, Illustrator 5.5, Pagemaker 5.0, PC Exchange, etc and
print at 1440 dpi on a new Epson 740

Personally, I prefer these older, easier to understand
application versions than the newest ones.
