Have you tried booting from the floppy?

This sounds to me vaguely like a problem I once had with a machine
that had a bent pin in the internal SCSI connector. When you
attached an external drive, it would stop doing anything (and
wouldn't boot) and when you removed it, it would happily proceed.
But you can't bend pins in that connector. I assume you've removed
the Zip drive as well, in case it has a bad cable?

If you can boot from the floppy or a CD, and then see the hard drive,
it's probably a driver problem. I've never been able to fix a driver
problem except by reformatting the drive, but some people report they
can just update the drivers. In any case, if the driver is bad AND
you can't boot from a Zip, you have an interesting backup problem.
:-(

But, your symptoms don't sound exactly like anything I've seen or
heard of. If the drive or driver is bad, you should see a blinking
question mark or hear a sad mac chime.
