If the screen is blank gray (I suppose this would look white on a
2400) with the arrow "stuck" in the top left corner, I have always
found this to be a SCSI problem - bad cables or SCSI ID conflict or
bad drive or bad termination.

thanks for trying to help me figure this one out, guys--but like i said in 
my post, the screen is absolutely blank--no cursor or "arrow", even. i've 
taken it off the zip, i've tried booting from the 2400c disktools disk, 
nothing. i'm quite familiar with the blinking question mark and the chimes 
of death from all the duos and macs i've had to deal with all these years, 
but this one has me stumped.
