I've just been to the MacSoft site, checking it out, and all I've got to say
is -- wow! Here is the url: <http://www.emulators.com/> Go to the demo
page to get the full particulars.

Only does up to 68040 emulation, and up to OS 8.1 so far, though. A PPC
version expected "later this year." You can buy a "ROM Module" from them
and install the ROM chips from up to 8 old Macs, and then emulate them all
on one PC. You've got to have a ROM chip, though. If the old Mac is
working, they include a utility to copy a "disk image" of the ROM for use
with SoftMac. They have a few PPC ROMs listed, too, and say that OS9 is
supported if you're using these ROMs, although there are no details, and the
chart shows the 5300 ROM-based SoftMac, for example, emulating a 68040.
Says you need a 75-Mhz Pentium processor to emulate a 68030. Faster to
emulate a 68040. You also don't need to partition your hard drive. The
emulator uses the Linux trick of creating "pocket" hard drive images using
existing hard drive space.

You can read Mac floppies in the Wintel disk drive, hook up Mac SCSI
peripherals (if the Wintel setup has a SCSI card), everything!

Funny thing is, at one point they're cautioning against using Windows 95 and
98, saying that the platforms are known to be very unstable, and "if you
don't want to reboot every 20 minutes" better buy Windows NT or 2000.

So why would anyone want to start with a shaky platform to run a Mac
emulation? I guess being able to use a Vaio might be one answer.
