The white phone jack connector marks the modem as the Apple Express
model, so the Telecom software is appropriate for optimization. Get the
software from the Apple site.
The shop probably probed the modem with ZTerm, or any such serial
connection utility. Open the application in terminal mode and key in
AT&F. The modem, if alive, will return OK. This certifies the modem.
You should be fine.
