Alex,
My issue was not if you should purchase an Chevy, a Ford or even a Honda. It was
what was the biggest problem for me in my classroom, while I was teaching my
Media Communication class. Each time the PC's were not working correctly they
cost both me and my students valuable time from the classroom experience. Even
when they were working, they were unreliable for my situation. I know the rest
of you find Floppy Disks to be of little use, but in a school situation the
students used them a great deal to take projects home, or to another class. The
PC's would on a regular basis, pretend to save to the floppy disk, but when you
checked there was nothing there, while the Mac's either always saved to the
disk, or told you there was a problem and you should get another one. These were
new PC's also, which the School Board made me purchase, ("because every business
uses them") which were under warranty. It was a productivity issue for me, not
an issue of picking one brand over another because your father owned one. In my
classroom, the Mac's cost more up front, but the PC's cost considerably more
both in time and money over the long haul.
Then there was the "Love Bug", which all the PC's could fall victim to, but you
could open the file up on a Mac to see how the VB code was written and have no
problem. Microsoft could have done a better job, but they didn't have to because
they have the majority of the market anyway. All of their stuff is almost great,
but not quite finished. Where else in the world has a substandard product become
the unit of choice for most people!
