I recently bought and just installed yesterday a 6 gig ibm drive from
mce in my 2400. Since I just started using it, I can't really give a
detailed report but so far it is not noisy. However, I haven't really
done intensive stuff yet. I think (hope) only the 8 gig ibm drives
have issues. My experience with IBM drives in servers has been
pretty good. I've only had one of their drives die and ibm was pretty
good about replacing it. I hope their quality carries over into
laptop drives.

I benchmarked the 6 gig ibm against the stock 1.2, also an IBM, and
it's more than twice as fast; 3364/8071 in reads and 4063/8678 in
writes, according to hard disk toolkit. The drive is actually faster
than most 3.5 inch fast scsi-2 drives I've tested. Also, movies play
smoother which is odd since 3.3meg/sec is more than fast enough for
mpeg and sorrenson video.
