I've never understood why moodtheme images had to be hosted offsite; it seems like some of the same problems would apply. But IIRC you've already said you're changing that?

They don't. Some people host them in their ScrapBook. The advantage to having them offsite was the ability to use meaningful filenames instead of trying to remember if pics.livejournal.com/tango/XSDA12334 is Happy or Sad.

Well, in the Time Before Scrapbook there wasn't even that
option. :) But for the purposes of this discussion, ScrapBook is still /semi/ offsite; it's image hosting that's directly affiliated with (and maintained by) LJ, but it's also not uploading to LJ itself. And regardless, there's still the /option/ of of offsite hosting, which there isn't with userpics.

The difference, I'm guessing, is that mood themes, like header images, only appear in journalspace, not on Official Site Pages. Yes, people can (and have) used oversized images, or huge-file-size animated images, or broken images, but for one thing those images never appear anywhere other than the user's journal (personal space rather than site space) and other users' friends pages (ditto), and for another the second bit is optional. (I can always use my own mood theme for my friends page.)

...it's also that LJ isn't affected by bandwidth issues if it's hosted offsite. :)
