This is happening because said friend is posting public first and
editing it to be friends-only.
The notification triggers right when they post the entry, and sends
instantly, and there is no way to unsend an email once it's sent.
I've confirmed that (at least on my development install of DW) that if
the entry is posted friends-only first, I do not get a notification
for it.
