The ability to indicate over 18 separately from a visible
birthdate would also be a boon to RP-ers. I remember once being
quite alarmed to find out that I'd been RPing smut with someone
whose actual birthdate I didn't know and who was at the time 15.
Fortunately she is now legal and nothing bad ever came of it for
either of us.
I was new to journal-based RP and it never occurred to me that
she might be underage; I knew she was a virgin because she warned
me about that ("tell me if I get something wrong, I never
actually did this"), had homework and went to classes, but I
thought she was in college. Ooops.
The journal birthdate was of course that of her character, who
had been born in 1926.
I've also been in the situation of playing a character in a
modern game who was a child. In that game I had no desire to
write chan logs, but I did want to SEE all the entries everyone
else in the game wrote when logged in as my character, who was
born in 1991 I think; at the time there were no content filters,
but if there had been, I'd have been locked out.
I don't particularly care any more if people know that I am 44
rather than 39; I've had enough people say "wow, cool!" that I am
over the embarrassment of being the oldest kid in the class. I
also don't care (with respect to reading my real journal) if you
are 15. I read porn when I was 15 and if it made me who I am
today clearly I am OK with that; it's your parents' job to police
your internet use, not mine.
But I'd like to know who I RP with is under 18 because of the
greater liability issues involved and the "ew/squick/freak"
factor that's there.
I've no idea how personas will or will not affect this, but
obviously people who use personas to RP won't want all their RP
journals to have the same birthdate anyway.
