It's not just memorial journals. I get notifications for things like the journal associated with one of the webcomics I follow. Since the software (AFAIK) has no way to distinguish memorial journals from any other (can/should that be fixed?) anyway, it sounds like the solution here is to give the journal owner (how's that for a "user" euphamism?) the ability to turn notifications off (or on) one journal at a time. Not sure how hard that would be, though.
