| We're also aware of the problem that people don't *want* to authorize
| us to move their content...
Which leads me to wonder why people would even want their posts up in a
community at all, but I guess my mindset (going all the way back to the days of
BBSes) is that anything you post online is roughly the equivalent of screaming
it at the top of your lungs in the middle of a crowded public square. I
genuinely don't get the distress over what would effectively be a domain change.
| One thing I think people are having problems with is the persistent
| belief that we *want* people to abandon LJ for Dreamwidth.
I think what you and Mark may be underestimating is the *very* strong desire
for a lot of people—especially in fandom—to feel like they *can* safely abandon
LJ without losing all the friendships and connections they've built up over the
years. A lot of users feel like they can trust LJ's current owners about as far
as they can spit a dead rat (myself included, and I'm a permanent member who
*hasn't* been directly involved in the past several rounds of fandom
kerfuffles). And there's the belief, backed up by a pattern of behavior, that
LJ's current owners care as much about the users as they would about the
aforementioned dead, wet rat.
These users want a new place to call home, without having to start over.
|We don't think "LJ" and "Dreamwidth" is an either/or; we think
| it's an "and".
I'm under the impression from a fair number of folks that it *needs* to be an
either/or because they want to be able to invest their time in one location,
not to be flitting back and forth between multiple sites just to ensure they've
maintained parallel postings.
| and we expect that the majority of our userbase will continue to
| maintain accounts on both services for at least the forseeable future.
|
| We are not expecting people to pick up
| stakes and move entirely to Dreamwidth overnight.
Some people probably will, and other people won't even bother with Dreamwidth
unless (or until) LJ does something so beyond the pale that they're willing to
leave under duress. If nothing else I think you may want to consider the
possibility of what you'll do if/when there's another mass exodus from
LiveJournal and people are coming to the shores of Dreamwidth like it's
turn-of-the-20th-century Ellis Island.
