Probably some other unicode bug. Where do we go from here? Have you tried another font?
It works under my debian/sid in zh_CN.UTF-8 locale with the font set: #define FONT "-*-simsun-medium-r-normal-*-13-*-*-*-p-*-iso10646-1"
