This looks like the same problems I was having with UTF8 and Japanese
characters.  Please check if the utf8-patch from dwm-mitch[1] works
for you.  It just changes the Xmb* text functions to Xutf8*.

I also use the font
"-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-13-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
instead of
"-*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-13-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
