I have had trouble working them, too. I feel I got lucky with the two
QSO's I made on 40 and 20 CW. I caught them both times when they showed
up initially calling CQ and worked them before they had a pileup.
Otherwise, when I've been able to hear them at all I've had no succes in
getting a QSO in the midst of the pileups.

I actually haven't heard them very often when they were supposed to be on
a given band and frequency. Tonight I heard nothing from them on 28 MHz
from a club station with a tribander at 120 ft. They were barely audible
on 18 MHz later on.

I have noticed with quite a few Pacific island DXpeditions in the past
(not just with AH3D) that an operator will work mostly JA's on a low
band when he has only a couple hours of opening left for USA. Maybe I'm
off base here, but it seems to me that the fair thing to do would be to
work North and South American stations until daylight shuts down the path
to USA, and then work JA's and other nighttime paths still available until
the DXpedition's local sunrise. Does that make sense?

Likewise, I'd expect a DXpedition to work EU on the low bands until EU
has their sunrise, then switch over to the Americas.

I don't usually complain either, but this DXpedition seemed to be
tougher to work than I expected. Maybe it was a combination of three
operators trying to stretch themselves to the limit in an attempt to make
everyone happy, mixed in with rather poor geomagnetic conditions. I'm
hoping we do get an occasional opportunity to work KH3 in the future.
