He DID upgrade to Extra Class in time.  At 12 years of age, it took some 
time for him to learn all he needed to know to pass the Advanced and Extra
Class Exams.  

Perhaps I should have written 'not (then)' instead of "not (yet)".

     I can't  help but wonder if he could copy 40 wpm and had a general class 
license, why did he not upgrade to Extra Class?
