Since the "cat" is out of the bag with UPS, that was the company who
destroyed my radios. In the original story, I failed to mention that last
year I had sent an Icom-751A back to WA state for repair. The 751A had a
rather common ICOM problem, and that was the frequency display was
intermittent. Also I had worn out the ON/OFF button power cycling the radio,
which at times cleared up the blank display. It was about a 10-1 ratio. 10
power cycles equal cleared display. After waiting about three weeks my Icom
returned from the factory in excellent physical condition, but when I pushed
the (new) On/Off button I was greeted with a blank display. I called Icom
and they said "it was okay when it left the factory" UPS must have damaged
it during transit. UPS said since there was no apparent box damage, they
weren't doing anything. I discovered the 10-1 power cycle ratio had been
reduced to a 5-1 ratio. Icom admitted no fault, and UPS admitted no fault,
each blamed it on the other. I had already spent $200.00 to Icom for repair,
and another $50.00 Dollars for shipping both ways. I resigned myself to live
with the 5-1 ON/OFF power cycling since my poor eyesight prohibited me from
repairing the radio on my own. After fighting the 751A for about a year I
decided to upgrade to a new state-of-the-art machine. Pick up the story at
that time which began the post in the paragraph below, except I failed to
mention the brand names of they radios. Number one was the IC-756PRO, number
two was the Kenwood TS-950SDX. Since both of these radios had been destroyed
by UPS, I decided to send my original 751A back to WA state for another
repair attempt. In the mean time I had several Thousand Dollars tied up in
the busted 756PRO, and TS-950SDX. When the Icom repair guy called to say my
751A was ready, I told to put "FRAGILE" stickers all over the box, which he
did. Well the 751A arrived and the box was in perfect condition. With great
anticipation I placed the newly repaired radio on the desk and pushed the
power button. ......................................... I was greeted by a
blank display, except now its down to a 2-1 ratio. This repair only cost me
about $130 dollars plus shipping both ways. I figure the 751A repair cost me
about $408.00 dollars total, but the power cycling HAS been reduced to 2-1.
As I said in the post below the 756PRO + TS-950SDX fiasco cost me about
$100.00. Lets see, that's about $508.00 Dollars and I'm almost back where I
started. No wonder people think we're crazy. Lets see now, I need to borrow
a few dollars to send to the latest Dxpedition, so I can pay the ARRL to
check off my cards, and add to my DXCC totals which no one ever sees! Geez!
