Could you try if that's still an issue with today update? what you describe seems to be the indicator-appmenu bug that got resolved yesterday with https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator- appmenu/15.02.0+16.04.20151028.2-0ubuntu2

Status in appmenu-qt5 package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: The global menu appears properly at first. But, when I click on it, it disappears completely. Nevertheless, I still can access the menu through the Alt key and searching for the menu manually there. I am using QtCreator 3.5.1 with Qt 5.5.1 (GCC 5.2.1 20151028, 64bit).
