I tried using the global menu, and now it works. It doesn't look as good as before: the item you click doesn't get a shadow/surrounded/highlighted and there's no continuum between the item selected and the drop down GUI, but the menu does work.

Nevertheless, I still can access the menu through the Alt key and searching for the menu manually there. I am using QtCreator 3.5.1 with Qt 5.5.1 (GCC 5.2.1 20151028, 64bit).
