I've noticed the same behaviour lately, using Jaunty and the pidgin 1:2.5.2-0ubuntu1.1 (according to aptitude).
When i have a fullscreen movie playing on my primary screen it will not show the first message on the OSD. The second message will be shown, which only adds text to the chat window. CAUSE: STEPS TO REPRODUCE: 1. Install jaunty on a test box 2. Start Pidgin open a bonjour account 3. Open a full screen movie in totem 4. Send a message from another box use bonjour 5. Note no notification for the first message 6. Send a second message 7. Note the notifyosd now produces a message.
