All appears to be fine now; downloaded a fresh copy of dx4win.exe and all is 
now well.

Next, try to open a log file and I get "a fatal error occurred reading the log 
file"......
this happens whatever log file I try to open (including the DX4WIN sample log), 
but
interestingly just a single QSO from the log file appears in the logging window 
(I see
LX1EA in the sample log for instance).    If I try to open my own log file 
(over 200,000
QSOs) the log appears to be opening in the background, but then just a single 
QSO appears
in the log entry window and I get the 'exception has occurred' message again.

Strange.....

Hi Steve,

Make a copy of your log and store it someplace different. Rename DX4WIN.CFG in 
the "SAVE"
directory to DX4WIN.CFG.OLD and start DX4W again. If it comes up without an 
error you then
just need to open you log and then set up all you preferences again. Hopefully 
you saved a
DX4WIN.ini file from Preferences>write ini file. Also Jim AD1C has an app note 
on his site
on doing this.
