One of the issues that has "bitten" some folks when they use the built in
"Windows" backup mechanism is that in some cases that backup/restoral
process is dependent on the Window's version.  In other words, if you did
the backup with Win98, you might not be able to do a restore on XP or vice
versa.  This restriction sometimes extends to patch levels on the same OS.
So, for example if you did a backup on XP version 1.1, you might not be able
to do a restore on XP version 1.2.  So, as long as the OS and version is
same, you should be ok.
