Sorry to hear about your problems Jim. Like Larry I have detailed
what I have done to try an avoid getting caught in such an event
again and so far it has worked.
Having retired from small office IT my solution is mirrored hard
drives on the main and ham computers. Each computer has installed 2
identical Maxtor drives and everything gets saved twice in real time
so with a HD crash the mirror is still there and bootable. In
addition I have on each computer a USB Maxtor external HD which is
bigger than a single drive in my mirrored system and every night it
backsup the data directories of the master mirrored drives that I
list for it and twice a week it makes a mirror image of the master
mirrored hard drive. I also keep a back up of the DXBase database
files on an 8meg USB Scandisk U3 Micro Cruzer stick. The stick is how
I move it to my laptop when I am on the road and want to work on the log.
Been there Done that like so many and with my current system while
still a pain a HD crash recovery is to install a new drive and make a
mirror copy of the surviving mirror and then install a new second
drive and copy the mirrored drive to that. It has meant a days work
as it takes several hours to transfer the data each time to the new
drives but it is painless by comparison to the old way. I find that
it is almost a necessity to mount new drives every 2-3 years in
computers that are running 24/7 as mine do as a further preventative
measure. I also clean my computers monthly changing or washing the
filters on air intakes etc. Ain't technology grand.

May I suggest for the future:
1. A 2nd HD with an image (Norton Ghost) either internal or external.
2. A flash drive. You can buy a 4 Gb one for $20
3. There are many places on line that offer free storage.
Been there.... Done that.
Not being anal but, I have 2 hard drives in my computer. (second is an
image that I do once a week).
I back up on a flash drive and also on 2 remote servers (daily) as well
as on my wifes laptop and my node HD!
