The xterm quest.
I started my xterm use in the mid 80's on sun3's and they had that
funny sunview interface but unlike DOS you could highlight text,
click the mouse select copy from a menu then click to select a
target and use the menu to paste (this was a sheeltool or commandtool).
After being a command line unix/dos guy for so long this was definatly
cool. A bit later I discovered xterm and the select text with left
button and paste with the middle. I think I discovered this when I
had a motif because sunview/openview was really annoying in that the
right mouse button did the menus and you had no control over what the
mouse buttons could do, so was born my first yearning for what is now
enlightenment.
OK so after I had motif and xterm I was farily happy (you could at
least do some configuration in motif and mwm),
then I discovered linux 0.8? and started to use it at home. After
trying to gather the kernel and other stuff myself I finally got a
copy of Yggdrasil Linux 0.99 and eventually a copy of Slackware.
Slackware had the cool COLOR enabled ls, which I love, so all was well
on linux and SGI but not on Solaris, HPUX, AIX (I do a lot of
heterogenious network design, integration, and installation).
Eventually the UNIX world setteled on CDE which has Dtterm which was
almost cool. On any Dtterm click on some text to highlight it, now
start vi go into insert mode and press the middle mouse button
and you get nothing :( I think dtterm wipes out the buffer where your
highlighted text is because if you use your scroolbar and scrool up
to some text that is off screen highlight it and then open vi and
paste it works fine.
So I went on my quest and tryed to get the latest xterm
source from opengroup and compile it an add color to it but the code
was so broken I decided to try to find someone who had allready started.
I found a few things but rxvt worked on the most plateforms that I
use so I am using rxvt-2.20. But there is a problem with it, do an
ls -al highlight several lines 10 or so, open vi or pine or emacs
now paste via middle mouse button and all hell breaks loose (well
you get a bunch of error bells) and you only get part of the text you
highlighted.
Next I was trying to find a new face for my Unicies because CDE is just
to boreing, I happened on enlightenment a while back in the early stages
and couldn't get it working on non linux so I bailed. Then later I
revisited the Gnome and E web pages and saw some screen shots and
there it was, Eterm in full color with background pixmaps (which I have
longed for ever since 8bit color came to the computer) and everything.
WooHoo I have verified that all of things that were broken in other
xterms are fixed in Eterm :)
Thanks to all who have worked to bring E, Gnome and Eterm to us.
