The encryption happens on the e-gold server.  You submit a form to them that contains 
your passphrase.  They then encrypt it and compare it to the "Hash" that they have.  
If it matches then you're in.



Even though the e-gold people don't know your passphrase, they do know the "Hash" of 
your alternate passphrase.  Which for some merchants would be just as bad if somebody 
else found out.
