Anti-Virus software is basically worthless. It only protects you against known
viruses, not some "home-brewed" monster that hasn't been found "in the wild" yet by
the likes of F-Secure, McAfee, Norton, etc.

It also makes one's system a-l-o-t s-l-o-w-e-r, if you don't have the latest and
greatest pentium whatever.

AV software makes you think you're secure when you're really not.

Rather than wasting your time with AV software and scrambling to get the latest virus
updates, just don't run untrusted content on your machine. That means no executable
files (.exe, .vbs, etc.).

Don't use a lame mail program like Outlook with the default settings; turn off the
executable content options.

If you must use M$ Office, get the latest version 2000 (or XP?) and set the macro
security settings to High, so if you open a doc or spread sheet with macros, they
won't run on your machine.

AV software is a waste of time and money, and it is not guaranteed to save your ass
(Murphy's law and all that).

Finally, use some common sense. It may not be common, but it is easily acquired...
