Ben, in U.S. football (ie, gridiron .. the Superbowl etc) being 
"sacked" more or less means being tackled to the ground, eg, "the 
quarterback was sacked even before he threw the ball"

So it is a specific sports term.  It sounds very funny to American ears.

It would be like if Americans said "he got handballed from IBM" 
(meaning fired)!
