I can't tell you how you get an account as an American company - I'd
actually like to know the answer to that before I head back there - but
perhaps knowing who the big banks are there can give you somewhere to start.

In Australia we have what is called the "four pillar" banks, which aren't
allowed to merge. They are (in order from biggest to smallest

National Australia Bank (NAB) - http://www.nab.com.au
Commonwealth Bank - http://www.commbank.com.au
Westpac - http://www.westpac.com.au
ANZ - http://www.anz.com.au

Then we have second tier banks...

Colonial (acquired recently by Commonwealth Bank) -
http://www.colonial.com.au
St George - http://www.stgeorge.com.au

...and others, more local banks I'd say.

Any other Aussies who want to add more, do so.
