Readers, Gaithmans received an application for inclusion to our Inner Circle membership this morning and a bank wire payment shortly afterwards. As part of our Know Your Endorser program we attempted to contact the customer by phone which proved to be a non-working number. I e-mailed the individual to let them know this was in violation of our Terms of Service and suspended the application.
Upon further communication with the financial institution involved, it appears that yet another US citizen was being duped by the good old "Auction Scam" that we warn users about on our website: http://www.gaithmans.com/fraud.html Please let it be known that Gaithmans has no partnerships, joint ventures, or affiliates that sell computer equipment, cameras, or any other products via auction sites or other websites. Gaithmans does not accept third party funding. DO NOT remit payment to Gaithmans for anything other than inexchanges for gold backed currencies such as e-gold and e-bullion for your own account. Any funds received for purposes other than said business will be returned to the remitting financial institution. We are now being threatened by an individual calling by IP phone from Romania (big surprise!) who is going to: (snip) If you don't fund my e-gold account now i will report you at FBI . My brother is working at FBI . You are a fraud company . Fund my e-gold now . Thanks (end snip) Ha! At least he said "Thanks"! Have you "won" an auction or tried to buy something online? If so, practice common sense. Keep the following tips from the Gaithmans Fraud Prevention page in mind: (snip) Fraud Prevention (The money you save may be your own!) Fraud and online scams are not only a very real threat facing today's on-line community and Gold Economy, they are also growing at an alarming rate! On-line auctions sites, global e-commerce, and the span of technology have also brought about an explosion in crimes committed against Internet users. Credit card fraud, identity theft, password hacking...are just a few examples. It is now more important than ever to be careful about the people you meet, the sites you view, and the information you divulge over the Internet. Also, remember that stored value currencies are "non-repudiable" in nature. This means once you spend your stored value currency, the transaction cannot be reversed. (See e-gold's policy here!) If someone wants to be paid in stored value currency before delivering goods or in return for an "investment", be sure to complete your own thorough Due Diligence research and verify the person's or company's references for your financial safety and protection. Fraud Prevention, Safety and Common Sense Tips: When making purchases over the Internet, ask for a verifiable phone number and physical address. Check BOTH for accuracy and contact ability. Be wary of non-working numbers, voicemails, and forwarding services. Ask yourself...why is this person is not providing a direct phone number!?!? Ask for personal and professional references. Can you contact another person who has done business with this person or company? Be sure this person is an actual customer of the person who gave you their information and not just a friend or family member. Remember thieves are smart and often work in pairs!! Ask for delivery guarantee by a courier service. Always try to utilize the United States Postal Service. (Save all mailing labels and packages from the sender.) Committing fraud via the Post Office is a FEDERAL offense and will involve the Postal Inspectors. Fraudsters can be tracked by the mailing labels since all Post Office lobbies are under video surveillance. Scammers and thieves know this and will try to avoid using the United States Postal Service at all costs. Don't believe someone who tells you its not "convenient" or there is not a Post Office close by...there are several (or at least one) in every city of the USA. Request tracking numbers and VERIFY the numbers with the appropriate courier. Consider use of an escrow service for payments or payment upon delivery of goods. Be careful when using escrow services! Several scams have set up fake escrow services to collect funds from victims then disappear once payment is received! For more info, review www.fraudwarning.net (end snip) Be careful out there!
