AIB sues US banks to recover fraud loss

ALLIED Irish Banks (AIB) is suing a group of its American trading partners, thought to 
include Citigroup, in an attempt to recover some of the $700 million (£439 million) 
lost in a foreign exchange fraud carried out by John Rusnak, a rogue trader. 

The bank said yesterday that it was actively attempting to recoup some of its losses, 
in the wake of the conviction last month of Rusnak for fraud. On Tuesday, the former 
dealer started a seven-and-a-half-year sentence at Fort Dix prison in New Jersey. 

The directors of AIB, who themselves came close to losing their jobs over the scandal, 
have always maintained that Rusnak was helped by other traders in the dollar-yen 
exchange markets. The foreign exchange dealer worked at Allfirst, AIB's Baltimore 
subsidiary.
