This is probably true. ICANN still requires the big bucks, but then if you
or I became ICANN accredited we would have to stop anonymous/privacy
services which by contract they make null and void as an option and this
is why you find godaddy offering only semi-private services under a
different comany name. Not a good option for you or I it seems.

No need for that... it would be a waste of money for us. We have scripts
to make queries seamlessly already... There is no node needed for us
either. Registrations are governed by the Automaton which is basically a
database with an email controlled front end all relatively painless. I
don't plan on serving a wildcard system anytime soon so we will get by
with what we already have on the site after some expansion of the scipts.
