(I have VERY-limited knowledge of banking/banks, but...)

My dim understanding is that wires are like rifle-shots while an ACH
retains some of the boomerang-characteristics of a check (meaning
they can reverse your $$ on a whim!) while avoiding the costly and
inconvenient pieces of paper for the bank. As a consumer, you want
to get a wire (well, you should REALLY-want an e-gold spend!) but
it can be cheaper to *send* an ACH than a wire, I've heard.
