Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the suggestion - I installed irqbalance and noted that the
values /proc/*/smp_affinity shifted away from 'f' to a single CPU, and
hence the values in /proc/interrupts are now incrementing independently
per-core.

Alas this hasn't made an appreciable difference to the rate of dropped
packets reported :(
