It's a winner - thank you so much for the eagle-eyed scan of the lspci
output :)

The annoying thing is I've gone back to check our older 'cor1' and
'cor2' routers - these are HP DL160s, and both of the slots are
genuinely x4 - grr!

Still, I shan't forget this experience in a hurry :)
