Compared to a fork/branch, a sandbox makes things harder to be moved back into Platform. The GitHub fork-based workflow is now much better at encouraging innovation and to have this innovation back into the original repo. I believe it's an interesting thing to question whether e4 could try other processes to foster innovation than being a sandbox (as a complement, not as an alternative - yet ;) AFAIK we could also have Github repos handled by the e4 project. What's the value?
