In addition to all the Java overhead, my guess is that it's storing
information about all the classes, methods, variables, constants and files
associated with your project. (Which is something that less-intelligent IDEs
probably don't bother doing.)

But its basic mission is not to simply edit files. Its mission is to
introduce some intelligence into a development environment, and I think it
does a great job.

Development for me is faster and more enjoyable because of IDEA. I agree
that it uses a lot of resources, and I used to have a lot of problems with
the speed. But my solution was to go out and buy a new computer. IDEA really
flies on a 1.8GHz processor with 1GB of RAM :)

Though of course anything that the JetBrainiacs can do to increase the speed
and decrease the memory requirements will be much appreciated by all, I'm
sure...
