In addition to all the Java overhead, my guess is that it's storing information about all the classes, methods, variables, constants and files associated with your project. Development for me is faster and more enjoyable because of IDEA. I agree that it uses a lot of resources, and I used to have a lot of problems with the speed. But my solution was to go out and buy a new computer.
