That's one of the tunings that Brescianello uses in his sonatas for gallichon. 
And I really think one needs to look at music for mandoras to find the roots of 
early guitar music.  Even the emphases on opera variations and potpourris is 
similar.  Some of the sources even state "fuer Guitare oder Mandora."  My 
favorite, "2 Arien Aus der Oper Sultan Wampum oder Die Wuensch fuer die 
Mandora. Arrangiert von Joseph Zink.

Incidentally it's notated on the grand staff. The composer of the opera is 
F.X.Suessmayr, Mozart's student.
