Great. India did the same thing recently. But how long can developing countri
es avoid the temptation of "easy life" at the expense of the environment. Corp
orations and individuals intent upon making money in the name of development an
d progress may still prevail.

The Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology announces the
publication of Numbers 2 and 3 in its monograph series, Northwest
Fauna. Both issues showcase significant manuscripts prepared over 40
years ago, but which remained unpublished for reasons unrelated to the
     quality of the science.

Northwest Fauna Number 2 (US$ 15) includes Mammals of the Olympic
National Park and Vicinity, by Victor B. Scheffer. Although buried in
park files since 1949, this paper played an important role in the
recent controversy over mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) in
Olympic National Park (Anunsen and Anunsen. 1993. Conserv. Biol.
     7:954--957; Scheffer. 1993. Conserv. Biol. 7:916--919; Lyman. 1994.
Conserv. Biol. 8:898--901). This monograph includes a number of
photographs of historical interest, and its publication represents a
significant addition to the mammalogy of the Pacific Northwest. This
issue includes a Preface by Keith B. Aubry and Murray L. Johnson.

Northwest Fauna Number 3 (US$ 10) includes Reptiles of the State of
Washington, by Murray L. Johnson. This monograph was prepared in 1954
and was originally to have been published by the University of
Washington Press. This issue includes a Preface, by Robert M. Storm,
and Distribution of Amphibians and Reptiles in Washington State, by
Kelly R. McAllister. The latter is a compilation of up-to-date
distribution maps from the Washington State GAP Analysis Project.

Both monographs are available (prepaid, include $2 per order for
postage and handling) from: Janet Jones, Treasurer, Society for
Northwestern Vertebrate Biology, 4820 Yelm Highway SE, Suite B 175,
     Olympia, WA 98503.
