"Population Bomb: Two Americans Export Chemical Sterilization to
the Third World. More Than 100,000 Women Undergo the Procedure;
Cancer Risk Is Feared. Secret Doings in Vietnam." Wall Street
Journal, 18 June 98, A1, A10-A11.
This lengthy article describes the efforts of Americans
Stephen D. Mumford and Elton Kessel to export pellets made
of quinacrine (pronounced KWIN-a-krin) to sterilize Third
World women. More than 100,000 women have been sterilized
with quinacrine. Quinacrine is inserted directly into the
uterus and prevents pregnancy by scarring the fallopian
tubes. After the painful procedure, some women experience
short term side effects such as abnormal menstrual bleeding,
backaches, fever, lower abdominal pain, and headaches.
Independent laboratory studies in the United States indicate
that quinacrine causes cells to mutate, indicating that it
may cause cancer as well. Quinacrine sterilizations are not
permitted in the United States and are opposed by most major
family-planning organizations and many foreign governments.
