POSITIONS ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Human Ecology (DHE) of CINVESTAV-Merida, in Yucatan,
Mexico, studies the interactions between Homo sapiens, ecosystems and
sociocultural systems.

The multidisciplinary staff of the DEH is doing research in two main areas
of human ecology in the Southeast of Mexico:

· Social use of ecosystems; i.e. the rise, modification, functions and
collapse of the social and cultural ways to perceive, appropriate and
transform the environment, and

· Biological status of the human populations; i.e. the main characteristics
of human growth, development, and behavior. Also the health status of such
populations, as a result of the interaction between sociocultural systems
and nature.

The DHE announces, subject to budgetary approval, research positions in

· Terrestrial ecology, with focus on social use of ecosystems
· Environmental economy
· Regional development, with focus on regional effects of modernization and
globalization
· Population and environment
· Urban ecology, with focus on well-being
OR
· Environmental health

The deadline for a first stage of selection is November 15th, 1999. Results
will be announced  before December 1st, 1999. The starting time of these
positions will depend from 1) budget availability, and 2) agreement between
the selected candidates and the Head of the Department of Human Ecology.


Candidates should send the following:

1. An updated Curriculum Vitae. Please be sure the CV includes: a) a
covering letter stating in which area, from the previous list, the candidate
is interested in; b) a list of all the fellowships and research grants
obtained, and c) a full list of publications.
2. A xerocopy of the Ph. D. diploma.
3. Non native Spanish speakers should proof proficiency in spoken Spanish.
4. Names and addresses of previous chiefs or heads of Department or research
project with whom the candidate had collaborated.
5.  Xerocopy of the five most important publications, related with any of
the areas from the previous list (If necessary, translated to English or
Spanish).
6. A brief presentation of the research line and its relevance for human
ecology.
7. A brief working plan for one year, including research and lecturing in
the DHE postgraduate program.
