Humanities and Social Sciences in Engineering.  The Division of Technology,
Culture, and Communication at the University of Virginia (UVa) seeks to hire
a chairperson at the level of full professor.  Outstanding candidates may be
eligible for an endowed professorship.  For over 60 years, faculty in the
Division have used interdisciplinary teaching and research to investigate
the social and cultural contexts of technology and science.  As part of
UVa's School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Division offers courses
on the interaction of technology and society, provides instruction in
writing and speaking for professionals, and manages the school-wide
undergraduate thesis program.  Applicants must demonstrate significant
research and teaching accomplishments in using approaches from the
humanities and social sciences to investigate technology and science, and
they should be committed to teaching in a professional school.  Candidates
may have a background in ethics in the professions, traditional humanities
and social science fields, or interdisciplinary fields (historical,
sociological, anthropological, literary, and rhetorical aspects of technology
and
science).  The Division includes scholars from a variety of disciplines,
and the chair must be able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary
environment, including close cooperation with faculty in engineering and
other units in the university.  The search committee will begin reviewing
applications as soon as they are received and will continue to do so until
