WOMEN AND POWER: ENGENDERING RISK
A Biennial Interdisciplinary Conference in Women's Studies
At Middle Tennessee State University (just south of Nashville) March 8-10,
2001


Keynote Speaker: Mab Segrest, author of _Memoirs of a Race Traitor_
Featured Speaker: Miriam Ching Louie, speaking on immigrant women and labor
Featured Filmmaker: Barbara Trent, Oscar award-winner for _The Panama
Deception_


A call for proposals for individual papers, panels, and other presentation
formats (such as roundtables and performances) addressing the conference
theme of Women and Power: Engendering Risk.

Engendering Risk-risks women face as well as risks women take, particularly
as risk relates to structures, experiences, and representations of power.
Possible topics include

      o Risky feminisms and risky politics
      o Technological ventures and body politics
      o Daredevils: women in risky sports
      o Soldiers, supporters, dissenters: women and war
      o Croning: growing older
      o Women's spirituality
      o Risky business: global and local commodification of women
      o The new woman in literature and art
      o Risqu® women
      o Harsh punishments: women and crime
      o Investing in women: education, business
      o Breaking the glass ceiling o Pioneering women
      o Power, play, sex, and desire
      o Gender variation
      o Risky women authors and characters
      o Women in media: risking feminism
      o The action-adventure heroine and the limits of media
      o Environmental hazards and eco-feminism
      o Women at economic risk

Proposals for 18-20-minute papers should be 250-500 words with working
bibliography. Proposals for panel sessions should include a description of
purpose, form, and content with names and addresses of each member and
abstracts of contributing papers.

All materials should be postmarked by November 15, 2000. (Extended
deadline.)
