Position Announcement: Program Assistant Scientific Integrity Program Washington, DC Office Union of Concerned Scientists The manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal government agency scientific research and federal science advisory committees has become pervasive in recent years. The UCS Scientific Integrity Program (SIP) works to implement systemic changes that will improve the role and effectiveness of science in federal policy making. The SIP Program Assistant works with the SIP team to strengthen communication with the scientific community and raise awareness about the misuse of science with policy makers, the media, and the general public. As the person responsible for coordinating a network of thousands of scientists, the Program Assistant's duties will include a significant amount of data management, as well as email and telephone communication with scientists. The Program Assistant will assist with outreach to scientists and the public; draft articles for the web site and other audiences; organize and participate in SIP team and coalition meetings; conduct various research projects; help organize special events and training sessions; assist with legislative efforts; and track media related to the issue. The Program Assistant will also provide general administrative support to the Program Director and reception coverage as part of the office administrative pool. As the program is quite dynamic, the Program Assistant may have significant opportunity to take on new projects as fits his or her skill set. Candidates should possess strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Access and Word, and the Internet. Robust written and oral communications abilities, solid administrative skills, event organizing experience, a working knowledge of and interest in the way in which the U.S. government functions, and the ability to work independently and as a part of a group are necessary for this position. Most of all, candidates should possess a clear understanding of the current threats to the integrity of science, a passion for improving the way in which science informs policy making, and a demonstrable commitment to working in the public interest/non-profit sector. A minimum of two years of relevant experience is strongly preferred, preferably in a non-profit setting.
