Position Announcement:

Program Assistant
Scientific Integrity Program
Washington, DC Office
Union of Concerned Scientists

The manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal government
agency scientific research and federal science advisory committees has
become pervasive in recent years. The UCS Scientific Integrity Program
(SIP) works to implement systemic changes that will improve the role and
effectiveness of science in federal policy making.

The SIP Program Assistant works with the SIP team to strengthen
communication with the scientific community and raise awareness about
the misuse of science with policy makers, the media, and the general
public. As the person responsible for coordinating a network of
thousands of scientists, the Program Assistant's duties will include a
significant amount of data management, as well as email and telephone
communication with scientists.

The Program Assistant will assist with outreach to scientists and the
public; draft articles for the web site and other audiences; organize
and participate in SIP team and coalition meetings; conduct various
research projects; help organize special events and training sessions;
assist with legislative efforts; and track media related to the issue.
The Program Assistant will also provide general administrative support
to the Program Director and reception coverage as part of the office
administrative pool. As the program is quite dynamic, the Program
Assistant may have significant opportunity to take on new projects as
fits his or her skill set.

Candidates should possess strong computer skills, particularly with
Microsoft Access and Word, and the Internet. Robust written and oral
communications abilities, solid administrative skills, event organizing
experience, a working knowledge of and interest in the way in which the
U.S. government functions, and the ability to work independently and as
a part of a group are necessary for this position. Most of all,
candidates should possess a clear understanding of the current threats
to the integrity of science, a passion for improving the way in which
science informs policy making, and a demonstrable commitment to working
in the public interest/non-profit sector. A minimum of two years of
relevant experience is strongly preferred, preferably in a non-profit
setting.
