AIBS Public Affairs / Policy Representative

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) is accepting
applications for a newly created Public Affairs / Policy Representative
(PAR) position. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience
working at the interface of science, communications, and public policy.  

The PAR will work to identify opportunities for NEON (National Ecological
Observatory Network) to establish partnerships with local to international
projects that could benefit from or contribute to NEON; provide the broader
science community with information about NEON-related developments; and,
plan, attend, and report on briefings and similar projects that will
increase public awareness of NEON.  

Knowledge, skills, and experience:

1.      
A degree (graduate degree preferred) in a biological or closely related
science and work experience in public outreach, science communication, or
science policy are preferred. 
2.      
Experience working for a non-governmental organization or government agency
is highly desired.
3.      
Appreciation and understanding of the culture of the science community are
essential.
4.      
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
5.      
Experience building and working with coalitions is highly desired.
6.      
The ability to work on tight deadlines with short turnaround times is essential.
7.      
Sound judgment, creativity, the capacity to quickly synthesize diverse
sources of information, and the ability to anticipate future work product
needs are highly desired.

employment start date of October 2007.  Note, an AIBS representative will be
present at the 2007 Ecological Society of America annual meeting for
