Dear Ecologgers, A few weeks ago I had posted about suggestions for surveys that could be given to students in an intro class for Environmental Studies, to assess their attitudes coming into the course. Thanks to all who responded-- you gave me some great suggestions! Some of you also asked that I share with the list whatever final survey I came up with, so I am attaching what I used (I had to paste it into the body of the email, as Ecolog apparently does not allow attachments). I gave it to my class yesterday (day 1), and will give it again on the last day to see if general attitudes have changed. The survey was anonymous and the course has 80 students. I'm sure this isn't the perfect survey, but it will serve my purposes for starters and I can modify it in future semesters. Thanks, Anita Anita I. Stone, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Biology Grand Valley State University Allendale, MI 49401 USA Office: (616) 331-2812 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Stone 2007 Bio 105 Questionnaire 1= Strongly disagree; 2= Disagree; 3= Not sure; 4= Agree; 5= Strongly Agree Humans have the right to modify the natural environment to suit their needs Plants and animals have as much right as human to exist If things continue with the present course, we will soon experience a major ecological catastrophe Nature is valuable for its own sake. The balance of nature is very delicate and easily upset. Global warming is happening. Global warming is caused by human activities. I think spending time in nature is boring Even if public transportation were more efficient than it is, I would prefer to drive my car I am willing to consume less and go without some comforts if it helps to protect the environment. I would never consider becoming vegetarian or reducing my consumption of meat for environmental reasons. I recycle as much as possible on campus I recycle as much as possible at home I would buy hybrid car If I ever get extra income I will donate some money to an environmental organization. I try to buy locally-grown (Michigan) products The environmental views held by political candidates affect my decision of whom to vote for. Human are severely abusing the environment The government should give financial support to research related to the development of alternative energy sources, such as solar energy I cannot see any real environmental problems being created by rapid economic growth. It only creates benefits. Humans were meant to rule over the rest of nature People who say overpopulation is a problem are wrong. The progress of a district should not be held up with the excuse of protecting some birds. The so-called ecological crisis faced by humankind has been greatly exaggerated List some things you do that you feel are good for the environment (big or small) List some things you do that you feel are not good for the environment (big or small) What do you hope to learn in this class?
