The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking applicants for a full-time, year-round Research Assistant. This position is funded in part through the LTER/NICCR soil warming experiments at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts. These experiments are part of a long-term study investigating the effects of climate change on carbon and nitrogen cycling in a northern temperate forest. Currently a newly DOE- funded soil and air warming experiment is being built, and the position also involves construction, maintenance and sampling on the new site. Additional Information: Duties include on-site construction and management of a large air and soil warming experiment, which uses open-top chambers to study the effects of warming on various aspects of tree recruitment. Maintenance of two existing long term soil warming experiments, sampling of trace gases, soil, and vegetation for chemical analysis, laboratory analysis of samples, data management and analysis and participation in writing of scientific papers. Basic Qualifications: College graduate with a Bachelor's degree in science (ecology, biology, chemistry, physics). Strong math and statistical skills, attention to detail, experience in independent research and coursework with laboratory and field components. Applicant must have experience with chemical analytical equipment including autoanalyzer, CHN analyzer and gas chromatograph. A willingness to learn about the electrical engineering aspects of the three warming studies is also essential.
