I am looking for simple alternatives to hemispheric photography for
comparing light environments in secondary forests. I have seen some papers
that use red:far red light ratios as a relative metric for light
penetrance, and also have run across some basic hand-held field sensors
that take red:far red readings and seem not too over the top in terms of
pricing.

Does anyone have experience using these sorts of field sensors for red:
far red (e.g. Field Scout)? Are they reasonably effective and accurate? I
have relatively little background with this kind of work or
instrumentation, so any comments from those who have experience would be
welcome.

Thanks,

Diane
