Fellow privileged elites (or luddiletes as the case may be):
All populations self-regulate in accordance with their ability to reproduce
at dynamically stable levels according to the ups and downs of their
environments. Any species that considers itself all-wise may be able to put
off (by robbing "Peter" to pay "Paul," for example) the consequences of
environmental change, leading said wiseguys to entertain the illusion of
their greatness until "Peter" is petered out. Period.
(Ok, the end may not be that sudden, but the depauperation will be obvious
along with the hyperinflation. As the price of bluefin goes past, say
$100,000, the mud-cookie fraction will be unable to pass "go," and the raw
statistic will be a curve-reversal. If the genius at the stick rolls
inverted and shoves it forward, there should be quite a thrill, but when he
lands, the skeletons in the stands will be frozen in applause mode. A lonely
planet, indeed.)

Empowering women is just one of many steps in the right direction.
Education
helps, even though one list member in an off-list message complained that
since educated people make more and thus have larger footprints, education
is bad. Health care is another good step. Poor people often have large
families so that the children can work, so anything that alleviates
desperate poverty can be beneficial.

I thought this argument was done fore a long time ago, I mean, the
sociologists found that "enpowering" women was more profitable, that is,
women that find that can contribute to their well-being WILL use
concraception, otherwise it doesn`t matter if all the drug stores are full
of contraceptives.
It's anybodies guess HOW to empower women, it has been done and it's
probably being done right now, but it`s not an overnight thing. Here
Mexico,
it has finally been accepted by government officials that given money to
men, is just another way of subsidicing the beer industry or tequila, but
when they give to women's groups it usually flourishes into a small
buisness, so much for our macho economy.
