I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) www.imsg.com  is currently seeking to hire 
a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Analyst to work at the National Oceanic and 
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service (NOS), Center 
for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) office 
located in Silver Spring, MD.   The candidate will be responsible for 
providing support in the analysis, production, and assessment of 
operational HAB forecasts in the Gulf of Mexico and promoting advanced 
detection and mitigation of HAB impacts

CO-OPS is responsible for the collection, quality control, processing, 
dissemination, and archival of a wide range of operational oceanographic 
data and products including, water level, tidal current, and 
meteorological data.  CO-OPS is also responsible for developing and 
maintaining a harmful algal bloom (HAB) operation forecast system, called 
the HAB-OFS. Harmful algal blooms pose a serious threat to human and 
marine animal health and severely impact the seafood and tourism 
industries.  There maybe travel requirements to user meetings in Florida 
or Texas and/or workshops or conferences.  

Duties:
•       Organize and apply critical thinking skills to assess 
oceanographic and meteorological observations and predictions, remote 
sensing data and model results using GIS mapping tools, established SOP’s, 
and mental integration methods to produce an articulate and succinct HAB 
nowcast and forecast summary.
•       Produce and disseminate HAB Bulletins and supplemental HAB 
Bulletins for Texas and Florida using web-based software and incorporating 
SOP defined data analyses and forecasts. 
•       Produce and disseminate HAB conditions updates posted to the HAB-
OFS website as needed and directed in established SOP’s 
(http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/hab/). 
•       Perform daily monitoring of data and model outputs.
•       Perform quality control review of all forecast products and 
inquiry responses produced by team members.
•       Respond to all user and public inquiries pertaining to impacts or 
the HAB Bulletin received via email and phone in a timely manner and 
provide consulting services in area of expertise.
•       Conduct data entry of forecasts in a skill assessment 
spreadsheet/database and assess forecasts for accuracy using post-bulletin 
data from various sources.
•       Assist with the generation of annual skill statistics and written 
report.
•       Ensure that supporting data used for bulletin generation is filed 
and archived electronically in an organized fashion for future reference.
•       Assist in trouble shooting software as technical problems arise.
•       Assist in the development of a new software framework design and 
requirements for national HAB forecasting.
•       Assist in the development of a database to support skill 
assessment studies. 
•       Provide technical project support and requirements to specially 
assigned oceanographic projects.
•       Assist in the transition of additional HAB-OFS from development to 
operations in accordance to agency strategic goals.  Additional areas 
include, Gulf of Maine and Pacific Northwest.  

Qualifications:

•       Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate science based discipline is 
required
•       Graduate level education beneficial.  Direct experience may be 
used to offset education. 
•       Knowledge in IT applications such as database development, SQL, 
and/or programming skills in applications such as Matlab, IDL, SAS, is 
also beneficial. 
•       Experience working with geographic information systems (e.g. ESRI 
or advanced Google data mapping products), and remote sensing data is a 
plus, but not required. 
•       Ability to work well both independently and within a team 
structured environment and work efficiently to meet operational deadlines
•       Candidate should have an understanding that this work is primarily 
sedentary with the vast majority of the work being computer based in an 
office environment with no field work.
